Much of the gesso is loose along the top rail. In removing the wood putty repairs, I discover unpainted sections of the original finish underneath. By examining these I am able to determine that the frame was originally mordant gilded with imitation gold leaf. Most of the gesso is loose along the top, and while I was able to save some of it, much of it crumbles.
