The toning was decided through discussions with the customer. We carefully considered what little we had learned about the frame\'s original finish, and what we thought would best compliment the portrait. I made a simple trough by pressing modeling clay to the rail on both sides, then filled the trough with water putty. When it was firm but soft, I removed the clay, and sculpted the putty into shape. I had to carefully hand-carve the inner and outer cove on much of the top rail. It is cast in-situ using a soft rubber mold. First, I determine where the larges floweres will sit, and I drive numerous small wire brads into those areas to reinforce the new flowers. I fill the mold with Water Putty and white glue, then carefully press the mold into place, using the existing flowers to orient the mold. I allow this to harden for 24 hours, and repeat for each section. The castings are sometimes crude or mis-shapen directly from the mold, some also have small air pockets. In removing the wood putty repairs, I discover unpainted sections of the original finish underneath. By examining these I am able to determine that the frame was originally mordant gilded with imitation gold leaf. Most of the gesso is loose along the top, and while I was able to save some of it, much of it crumbles.</p> More damage - 12.31.1969 Tue, 06 Oct 2009 15:14:50 -0400 Detail of damage - 12.31.1969 <p><a href="" title="Detail of damage - 12.31.1969"> <img src="" alt="Detail of damage - 12.31.1969" style="border: 2px solid #000;" /> </a></p><p>Detail of damage - 12.31.1969</p><p>Much of the composition is damaged, and some elements are missing entirely. These raised flowers positioned atop the oval rail are in especially bad shape. Only one half of one section is complete and without significant cracks. I carefully make a mold of this section using rubber molding compound. It will be used to cast replacements for the missing sections. One of the first steps in restoring a frame like this is worrying at loose sections. I probe all pieces of compo, checking for stability. All loose pieces are carefully removed. All of the wood putty from the prior repairs is removed and discarded. The ornate details on the convex inside of the rail require special attention. The gold colored paint is flaking and peeling from much of this section. It appears to have been very thickly applied, and has filled in much of the detail in this panel. I carefully scrape away the paint from almost the entire convex panel. Although it is very time consuming, I am able to restore much of the original detail.</p> Detail of damage - 12.31.1969 Tue, 06 Oct 2009 15:14:50 -0400 Before - 12.31.1969 <p><a href="" title="Before - 12.31.1969"> <img src="" alt="Before - 12.31.1969" style="border: 2px solid #000;" /> </a></p><p>Before - 12.31.1969</p><p>This heavily damaged frame was brought to us after the painting it houses was restored. The painting is a ladies formal portrait on canvas. The lady is dressed in late 19th century clothing. I believe it was the client\'s great grandmother. I believe the frame to be contemporary to the portrait. It shows many characteristics common to late 19th century frames. It is constructed from multiple profiles of wood, probably poplar, joined with cut nails. The main oval section appears to be a complete frame unto itself, and the spandrel section was added from below. The seam where these two sections meet is concealed with a bead of composition flowers. The overall ornamentation is applied composition. At some point in the frame\'s history, an amatuer attempt was made to address some of the damage to the frame. Wood putty was used to clumsily fill voids in the ornament, and much of the top rail was irregularly filled and reshaped. The whole frame was then painted in gold colored paint. For this reason, the original finish can only be guessed at. The customer does not know when and by whom the repairs were made. Unfortunately, the customer is not aware of any photographs showing the frame prior to the repairs. An old photograph, even black and white, could offer some valuable clues as to the original finish.</p> Before - 12.31.1969
